My list consists of horror movies made after the year 2000 and are not remakes of Asian horror. This way, we won't have the predictable The Thing and The Ring near the top.
10: The Amityville Horror (2005)
This isn't a great movie by any stretch of the imagination but it was pretty hard hitting from the first minute with the DeFeo murders. It was a step above the original and was less boring.
The only issue I had with it was it was a very far fetched "true story" movie.
9: Quarantine (2008)
This was almost a shot for shot remake of Rec but for some reason, it worked. Unlike Psycho (1998) it managed to use the shot for shot to it's advantage. Mixing found footage with zombie terror!
Not as intense as Rec, but still a worthy American remake.
8: Mother's Day (2010)
Having watched the original after the remake, I am a little biased towards the remake. The original was very poor in my opinion and I would never watch it again.
The remake on the other hand was very intense with good acting overall. It was also directed by Darren Lynn Bousman who also directed a few of the Saw sequels.
7: Fright Night (2011)
A very risky remake to take on due to the original's cult following. It manages to pay off, sort of.
It still manages to remain true to the original yet with a slight twist. It doesn't set itself back in 1985. It is modern day Las Vegas, a clever location for the storyline. Another solid cast, especially Anton Yelchin as Charlie.
6: Evil Dead (2013)
A remake that was socially accepted due to the fact that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell were excited for it. It also helped Campbell fast track an Ash vs The Evil Dead TV Show.
The remake tries to emulate the camera movements of the original and stay faithful. As much as it's better than the original, it falls short of the sequel to the original, Evil Dead 2.
5: The Last House on the Left (2009)
A very frustrating movie in a good way. Easily far superior to the original on so many levels, the remake manages to keep the viewer watching but dying to look away.
The movie deals with horrifying moments but also shows what a parent is willing to do to get revenge for their baby.

4: I Spit on Your Grave (2010)
This is one of those movies that you mention in the same sentence as The Last House on the Left. The same was said for both originals.
This was a hard hitting remake that was very rewarding in the final act. It was the only movie on my list that didn't get a full theatrical run and I can understand why.
3: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

3: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
A remake that divides all horror fans alike. Some absolutely hate this remake due to their love for the original but some love it for what it is.
I am one of those who love it more than the original simply because it was more tense and better acted. Sure, I love the original, but that movie didn't age well. Luckily for the original, it is a classic. I hope the remake becomes a classic over time.

2: The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
Again, another movie that surpasses the original. This survival horror was a huge surprise for everyone and I haven't met a lot of people that prefer the original.
It felt like a 2 part movie. The first part was a tense build up to something big. The second part was total survival of the fittest horror. Incredible.
1: Dawn of the Dead (2004)

1: Dawn of the Dead (2004)
The original is still one of my favourite horror movies of all time and I love the remake equally. It was one of the first modern horror movies to introduce the running zombie. And oh man, that was a great move!
Same premise as the original but more tense and more claustrophobic. Possibly Zack Snyder's best movie to date.

So that's my top 10 horror remakes of the 21st century so far. By no means does this mean I do not enjoy their original counterparts. Let me know what you think and let me know what you would put in your top 10!
